Carrington Farm Surface Mine

All coal extraction has ceased on Carrington Farm surface mining site, approximately 520,000 of coal was extracted from the scheme. All soil replacements were completed in September 2003.

The woodlands and hedgerows were planted in 2006 with 10ha of native broadleave woodland planted; some 25,000 trees as well as 3000 meters of new hedging. Native broadleave species include Oak, Ash, Birch, Hazel and Holly. The hedges contain species such as Hawthorn, Blackthorn, Holly with hedgerow trees comprising of Hazel, Oak and Ash.

A hard core track has been constructed providing a circular route around the farm, running through the central woodland feature and around the newly created pond. All footpaths and stiles have been reinstated and can now be accessed. The pond has reached its high water level and aquatic vegetation is starting to establish naturally. The pond is already starting to attract a number of bird species and the following species can be seen on a regular basis: Mute Swans, Canada Geese, Tufted Ducks, Mallard, Teal and Snipe.
