Midlands & YorkshireMethley and Moss Carr Surface MineBetween Oulton and Methley, Leeds Site Status: Restoration complete, site in aftercare period
The Methley and Moss Carr surface coal mine was restored progressively to top soil level from 2001 to 2005. The site covers some 150ha. Over 1 million tones of coal was excavated from the area.
The site was finally completed to topsoil level during the summer of 2005. Since then a huge change can be seen onsite. Four wetland areas have been created as well as a forest area covering some 28ha containing some 43,000 trees. There has also been some 6,500 metres of hedging planted including 1000 hedgerow trees. There are also a number of small plantations scattered across the site to improve the aesthetic value of the site as well as creating shelter and valuable habitat for wildlife.
Footpaths leading across the site have now been restored with additional footpaths being created. Farm access tracks have also been restored for agricultural operations.
Agricultural areas restored are all currently in arable production with crops of oil seed rape, winter wheat and oats. A small area 5.75ha to the south east of the site has been restored to traditional estate parkland. This has been designed to recreate the neighbouring parkland. A wildflower seed mix has been used and traditional parkland trees have been planted such as Oak, Ash and Lime.
