Midlands & YorkshireRenishaw Surface MineNear Eckington, Derbyshire Site Status: Restoration complete, site in aftercare period Local Authority: Derbyshire County Council
In 1999 the Banks Group received planning permission for coal extraction on this site siuated near Eckington in Derbyshire. The land was on the former site of Renishaw Park Colliery, with nearly 28 acres of it being derelict including a colliery spoil heap, colliery buildings and a derelict house. Four hundred thousand tones of coal were extracted from the site and the land has been restored to native woodlands and short rotation coppice.
There has been over 3000 meters of new hedgerows established across the site, which are showing excellent early growth. Agricultural areas to the East and West of Staveley Lane have been planted with short rotation coppice ( Willow ).This area covers forty four hectares of the site.
As part of the approved scheme the former Renishaw Park Colliery spoil heap was lowered and reshaped to make it visually less intrusive. These works have been completed and a successful grass swath established on the site with the aid of incorporating bio solids into the soils. This area has now been established with some twenty thousand broadleave trees including such species as Birch, Alder, Holly, Ash, Rowan and Hazel.
