North EastFox Covert Surface MineNear Dinngton, Northumberland Site Status: Site restored Local Authority: Newcastle City Council/Northumberland County Council Our Foxcovert surface mine is located 1km from the village of Dinnington near Ponteland, Newcastle. Mining operations commenced in May 2005 with the aim of extracting 200,000 tonnes of coal to be supplied to the Alcan works at Lynemouth in Northumberland. All coal extraction has now ceased and the site has been restored to agricultural use with enhancement and management works for the adjacent Prestwick Carr. The site is now in its five year aftercare period. |
