North EastMoor HouseNorth East of Darlington Site Status: A scoping report has been submitted. We expect to submit a planning application in March 2009 Local Authority: Darlington Borough Council Click here for a site location plan Key features of the proposed wind farm: We are proposing the construction of up to 10 wind turbines, each with a capacity of around 2 - 3 megawatts (MW). This could provide up to 30MW of renewable electricity, or enough for 11,000 homes. The site would assist in delivering Tees Valleys 2010 renewable energy target of 138MW (currently only 8.25MW has been achieved). The electricity will be generated from a renewable energy source with no carbon dioxide emissions. Producing the equivalent energy by burning coal would produce around 1.1 million tonnes of CO2* over the life of the turbines. Turbine dimensions are being considered to achieve the optimum balance between energy production and visual impact. Tip heights of up to 125m are currently being considered. The wind farm would last for around 25 years, with around 12 months for construction and decommissioning. The grid connection would be to a local substation by overhead cables on wooden poles or by underground cables. There is an opportunity to connect into the large overhead cables that cross the site. *Based on a capacity of 20MW If you want to know more about wind farm development the World Wildlife Fund for Nature, Friends of the Earth and Greenpeace have set up an informative and comprehensive web site at http://www.yes2wind.com/. The website http://www.embracewind.com/ also has information about wind farms.
