North West

Armistead Wind Farm

Near Old Hutton, Cumbria
Site Status: A planning application for a wind farm was submitted in March 2008.
Local Authority: South Lakeland District Council

Our proposals can be summarised as:

  • Construction of 6 wind turbines, each with a capacity of 2 to 3MW
  • The turbines proposed have a hub height of around 60m, a rotor diameter of around 80m and a maximum tip height of 100m
  • These turbines will be more modern and produce more energy than those at the closest operational wind farm at Lambrigg
  • The turbines could produce between 12 and 18 MW of renewable energy, enough for up to 10,000 homes
  • The proposed site lies 3km south-east of Old Hutton and 9km north-east of Kirby Lonsdale
  • The site lies within one of the few areas identified in Cumbria as having a moderate/high capacity for wind farm development

Benefits of the Armistead Wind Farm proposals:

  • A reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by harnessing wind as an alternative to the burning of fossil fuels
  • Contribution to Cumbria’s regional targets for the provision of renewable energy generation. Cumbria’s target is 210MW of generation from onshore wind by 2010 and at February 2008 a total of 80MW was in operation
  • Support farm diversification and more ecologically and environmentally friendly agricultural practices
  • The proposal would include a community development fund supporting local energy efficiency, community projects and organisations
  • Employment during constrction and operation. Local Cumbrian firms such as Hanson Contracting, based in Penrith and Agrilek, based in Barrow employ over 50 people in wind farm construction generating annual turnover of around £20 million for the local economy
