North EastBates Colliery regeneration schemeFormer Bates Colliery, Blyth Site Status: Phase one outline application approved Jan 07, Phase two submitted April 08 Local Authority: Blyth Valley District Council The former Bates Colliery site , off Cowpen Road Blyth, has been vacant for a number of years. In 2007, Banks Developments obtained outline planning consent (subject to signing of a section 106 agreement) for a 5.3 hectare site which formed the first phase of a whole scale regeneration of the Bates site. Since then we have entered into a joint venture agreement with adjacent landowner, UK Coal to develop a further 5 hectares of land. This larger, phase two scheme was submitted for outline planning approval in April 2008 and covers an area of circa 11 hectares ( includes the phase 1 land) for a residential led development scheme.
As part of this scheme a separate application has been made by Northumberland County Council for the development of a new Primary School to replace the existing Morpeth Road school , located at Disreali Street near to the site. An indicative layout shows the school and up to 327 houses and flats of differing sizes and tenures including up to 30% affordable homes. It is the company’s intention to develop the site using sustainable methods of construction with the finished properties being of a high sustainable level, utilising renewable energy sources for heating and powering the properties. Further work is underway to discuss opportunities to extend the site in further phases north towards the river and discussions are ongoing with these landowners as well as Blyth Valley Borough Council, Northumberland County Council, SENNTRI and English Partnerships to drive forward the regeneration of this whole area. |
