Hazlehead Waste Management Project

Crow Edge, Barnsley
Site Status: Planning permission granted and implemented in 2005
Local Authority: Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council

Banks Waste Management Division identified the potential to utilise all the skills of the Group with the Hazlehead Restoration scheme.

The site comprised a large area of land previously in the ownership of Hepworth Building Products Ltd. It had, in the past, been used for the tipping of domestic waste, clay extraction and overburden tipping. The site had been undermined for coal and was in a derelict and despoiled state.

The scheme provided for the opencasting of the overburden material, removal of remaining clays and coal and the development of a landfill site. Some of the income from the landfill operation will be used for the restoration of the site.
The restoration scheme for the site gained the support of the local Parish Council and received planning permission from Barnsley Metropolitan Council.

The site has been issued with a PPC permit by the Environment Agency for the disposal of a wide range of non hazardous wastes.

Preliminary works for the commencement of the site were carried out in 2005, but the importation of waste cannot start until an overhead electricity line is diverted and road improvements are carried out.

The scheme will provide nine year's tipping and is capable of accepting domestic, commercial and industrial wastes. Provision for recycling and composting has been included. The organic matter recovered will be used to aid the restoration of the site which has limited soils available on site.
