North WestRigby Quarry Waste Management ProjectNear Wigan Site Status: Site being operated by 3 ‘C’ Waste Local Authority: Lancashire County Council This 30 hectare site was identified in the early 1990's and had been previously used for waste disposal and sand extraction. The site was in the ownership of two companies. Following planning applications by both companies, which were refused, Banks devised a comprehensive scheme that permitted restoration of the site in proximity to housing, restoration of the previously filled area, phased extraction of sand and gravel and the development of a modern fully engineered waste disposal site. A comprehensive scheme was devised that included the restoration of the area previously used for waste tipping, the extraction of sand and gravel and the final filling of the site with suitable waste materials. Planning permission was granted in 1995. Banks entered into an agreement with 3'C' Waste Limited, a major North West Landfill Operator, to build and operate the site. 3'C' Waste have been taken over by Waste Recycling Ltd. The restoration of the northern part of the site has been completed and waste infill operations are well advanced. Consent was granted in 2005 to install electricity producing generators fuelled by landfill gas. |
